COVID-19 is a disease caused by a virus called SARS-CoV-2. Most people with COVID-19 have mild symptoms, but some people become severely ill. The U.S. COVID-19 Vaccination Program began December 14, 2020. HomeTown Pharmacy quickly became involved in the vaccination and testing programs to protect and serve its communities. As the pandemic has evolved, HomeTown has continued to be on the forefront of the battle by working with state officials and local providers to dispense cutting edge monoclonal antibodies. Our team of pharmacy professionals will continue to monitor this pandemic and provide the latest services and treatment options until it is resolved.
COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective. Vaccine recommendations are different depending on your age, if you’ve contracted COVID, if you’ve received previous COVID-19 vaccines, and the time since your last COVID-19 vaccination or booster. As with other diseases, you are protected best from COVID-19 when you stay up-to-date with the recommended vaccine schedule. It is anticipated that COVID vaccines will be recommended annually like the flu vaccine. Visit any of our HomeTown Pharmacy locations and speak to one of our knowledgeable pharmacists to determine if you should be vaccinated against COVID-19 or receive a booster.
This mRNA-type COVID-19 vaccine is currently a two to three dose primary series depending upon the age of the patient. Children 6 months to 17 years should be given the first primary dose followed by a second primary dose 3-8 weeks apart. Children 6 months to 4 years old should be given a third primary dose 8 weeks after the second dose. Children 5-17 years should obtain a third dose of the updated Bivalent booster at least 2 months after their second primary dose.
Adults (18 years and older) should obtain a primary dose with the second primary dose 3-8 weeks after the first dose. A third dose of the updated Bivalent booster is recommended at least 2 months after their second primary dose.
This mRNA-type COVID-19 vaccine is for patients 18 years and older. It is a two dose primary series given 4-8 weeks apart followed by the updated Bivalent booster at least 2 months after the second primary series.
This viral vector-type COVID-19 vaccine for patients 18 years and older was initially a one shot primary series. The monovalent J&J/Janssen booster is now only available in limited situations. In most patients, Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 Bivalent vaccines are recommended at least 2 months after the initial series.
This Protein subunit vaccine contain pieces (spike proteins) of the virus that causes COVID-19. This protein-based approach is a more traditional one for vaccine development than the mRNA vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna. The Novavax COVID-19 is for patients 18 years and older. It is a two dose primary series given 3-8 weeks apart followed by the updated Bivalent booster at least 2 months after the second primary series.
Monoclonal antibody (mAb) therapy can be used to treat individuals who may be at serious risk and have tested positive for COVID-19 or have come in close contact with someone who has tested positive. The mAb treatments can block the virus that causes COVID-19 from entering cells in your body and limit the amount of virus in your body. This means you may have milder symptoms and may decrease the likelihood of being hospitalized. While mAb therapies are not available at all pharmacies, select HomeTown pharmacies (community, long-term care and infusion centers) have been authorized to carry these treatments.
